Mike and Richard,
Thanks for the Nehemiah HITCH tip - and thanks, Mike, for all the great
info on that line. Clearly, this is an avenue which I'm going to have to
explore this August when I'm in Salisbury.
My working hypothesis had been that my Sarah (Hitch?), wife of Elijah
ELLIS, was a dtr of Nehemiah HITCH. I think, though, that I'm trying to
force a square peg into a round hole. Elijah and Sarah's children
weren't born until 1800-1810, and Nehemiah's kids seem to be too early to
include my Sarah. Dang!
BTW - Mike, do you have the name of that 100 acre tract on the n/s of the
Wicomico that Nehemiah HITCH purchased from Joseph ELLIS in 1757?
There's got to be some kind of connection in all of this. Joseph ELLIS
patented some lands called "Ellis's Chance" in 1760 and "Ellis's
Addition" in 1765. In 1779, Joseph ELLIS sold ~20 acres of Ellis's
Addition to Louther HITCH. Louther HITCH ended up with 50 or so acres of
the Ellis's Chance tract, as well, in 1789. Now, in 1800, my Elijah
ELLIS patented another 18 acres of this tract, and then in 1830, he
willed it all to his dtr Matilda, w/o John McNEAL.
Obviously, the ELLIS and HITCH families had a lot of contact. It gets
confusing, but I hope to straighten it all out one fine day!
