Periodic Update: September, 1997
* * * * * * * * * * *
-There are a total of 360 files on the Home Page, containing over 13.5 mb of
data. The following items have been uploaded since our last update.
* * * * * * * * * * *
-Most of the Summer has been spent in reorganizing the information which is
getting quite voluminous. When we couldn't figure out what's where, then we
knew we had problems. In addition to simplifying the main page, all of the
links to IGSI files have been numbered to let users clearly know where they
have been and assist in reporting problems. It should assist also on return
visits. An attempt is also being made to place a "last time updated" on the
top of pages when they are substantially changed.
-One of the nicest things to come along is a surnames listing service by
Local.ie in the old country. It appears to be a function of Irish Telecomm,
founder of the Doras lists and Nua, a software firm in Ireland.
You post the names in which you are interested, leave a message, and wait.
You will receive e-mail messages from others who subsequently are interested
ONLY in that name (you may enter variant spellings). This is a pretty slick
system, unlike many of the mail lists which pour dozens of
messages across your console, few, if any, of particular interest.
Obviously, just because you have the same name, doesn't mean you're related;
but it is better than anything else out there. Check it out at:
http://names.local.ie/cgi-bin/index.cgi
Many names and messages are already there for you to browse; or, add your own
or strange spellings.

-We have made a "Best of the Best" list of Irish and other Genealogical links
which may be of use to visitors who don't have time to go through our full
list. (D Links) Suggestions and comments appreciated.
-New Irish Map information has been updated including a narrative index to
the new Discovery Series Maps. (See Section 1K)
-In Section 4O, we now have sorted the surnames being researched by IGSI
members by the location in Ireland. Also we have sorted those names
alphabetically and by frequency to see what's being searched.
-We have created two new categories of links. Section 8 contains information
on preserving your hard work from disaster -- not the computer disaster per
se, but the fire/flood/mayhem disaster. Additional contributions are wanted
here.
-Section 9 is the beginnings of a Section on genetic diseases, an offshoot of
genealogy which shouldn't be overlooked by the family historian. Some IGSI
members have personal experiences with bi-polar (manic-depressive) disease,
colon cancer, heart disease and other afflictions which are inherited from
parents, or perhaps from grandparents and passed on by parents.

-Peterborough, Ontario, 1871 Census. Head of Household Listed only 32 files
by community taking up over 3.0 mb. of space. On the Canadian Page.
Includes Name, Age, Occupation, Religion. (Section 7A-1)-County Longford
has found some links to Argentina, if you have gaucho blood. (Section 7C-1)
-The 1995 Surname Interest List of the IGSI has been Sorted by Place name in
addition to the regular listing. (Section 4O)
-The Remnants of the 1851 Antrim Census, found in a Zipped File at the
GenealogySF Home Page, have now been posted in the Census Substitute Section.
Includes, Names, Age, Occupation, Family Groups. (Section 5B-4)
-On the "Finders" Links Page, thee is a List of Co. Antrim Marriage Witnesses
and the bridal couple, also found on the GenealogySF Home Page. Includes a
street address to contact the poster of the names. This is a project based
in Australia.
-We have begun posting the index to the works of Riobard O'Dwyer, who has
published four books and written two more on the families of the Beara
Peninsula copper mining region of southwest Co. Cork. There are about 15,000
families indexed (over 3mb), both by husband and by wife, and the books may
contain as many as 80,000 names, beginning about 1820 and continuing into
the 20th Century. If you are an IGSI member, we have the four published
works and will do research for our members. If you desire
further informtion, you will have to contact Mr. O'Dwyer, who is a
Professional Genealogist, in Ireland. This is a tiny area of Cork, but if
you ancestors were miners in this country, they may have come from there.
It would be a good place to look. (Section 5F1 - 3 - 5)

-Virtually all of our periodicals have been indexed through the end of 1996
for their significant genealogical articles (not our sizeable collection of
The Irish Genealogist; we willl be scanning those tables of contents when we
get our scanning program going); a separate message with a list of those
periodicals will be sent out. (Section 4J)
-The surnames found most frequently in individual Irish counties on the 1890
Matheson lists have been computerized and sorted by surname. See the Irish
Names area. (Section 5E - 2)
-We have found articles on the Minnesota Sweetman Colony (Currie/Avoca,
Murray County, and a listing of R.C. Churches in MN considered "majority
Irish" in their makeup. (Section 6B)

-A new section has been made which makes links to the GenWeb pages of US and
Canadian large Cities (where the Irish Immigrant was most likely to settle),
and to those Counties with Irish Names attached to them or Counties in which
Irish Settlements are known to have existed. Suggestions for further
additions are requested. The GenWeb Project, begun in the State of Kentucky
in 1996, is an attempt to find "sponsors" for every American and Canadian
County, which makes County Pages using a similar format, to make easier the
finding and exchange of genealogical and historical information. (Section
6C)
-Another new "Names" section has been made which has the 100 most common
Surnames of Ireland in 1890 and the Most Common Surnames in Irish Counties,
sorted by Surname, both from Robert Matheson's book, some Ancient Surnames
with their modern equivalents from O'Hara and soon it will have additional
Surname lists. (Section 5E)
