Saw the post from Lower Delmarva Roots that you had sent to Shari. I am so
happy for you and your story warms all of our hearts. It especially got my
attention-my maiden name is GORDY. I would like what info. you have on
Polly/Mary Gordy Elliott. My GORDY family first lived in Allen, Md. (1600's)
area then moved to a Wheatley (my great grandmother was a Wheatley) farm out
in the country on the road between Eldorado and Sharptown by Wheatley's
Church. The state line isn't far away, and the Mason Dixon Line goes thru
Wheatley-Gordy farm. I think the Mary/Polly Gordy was a sister of my
grandfather's. Thanks!
Congratulations! My family's farm graveyard was plowed about 45 years ago :(
so I identify with what you said. Happy New Year from Florida! xxBetty Gordy

Dear Betty,
The above message was an answer to another message about an ELLIOT cemetery
but my interest is in your WHEATLEY reference. My 3rd G grandfather was John
WHEATLEY. All I know about him is what was in the 1850 Adams county IL
census. He was born in MD circa 1790. His wife and all his children were born
in KY. They apparently moved to IL in early 1850. I looked at the 1800 MD
census and found about 20 wheatley families and all but a couple were in
Dorchester county. So the odds are he was born in Dorchester county. I was
also aware of the Wheatley church as I read about it in a periodical put out
by a genealogy society from the Eastern shore. As I understand, it is a stone
church built around 1650 and still in use. From your message I was able to
pin point the
location of this church which I had not been able to do before and for that I
am
grateful. Even if you cannot provide me with any further WHEATLEY info it will
have been worth it. Do you have any data on your line of WHEATLEY? Also I
would be interested in any info you have on the church.
Your cousin?(maybe) Ray Kroeger on the Oregon coast
Message 3:
Hi Cousin! Send me your address and I will send you a photocopy of info. on
the Edward Wheatley Chapel-a small (8 members now) Methodist Episcopal Chapel.
It's wood, and includes the one time one room schoolhouse next door as a
parish hall (kitchen, and meeting room for Boy Scouts etc.). Services are
irregular (once every 4 weeks I think) because the circuit minister comes from
a larger town nearby. They're struggling to keep it going financially. (If
Wheatley family members send donations I'm sure it would be appreciated and
keep the chapel open and there for us to visit). It sits in a pine grove and
is in the middle of a district that once was all Wheatley farms. The
Wheatley family cemetary is on a farm nearby. Some of the elderly members are
Wheatleys. Will get back to you about the particulars. It's a beautiful
area. They grow soy beans and milo (feed) in the area. xxBetty
