Tom:
Any idea what the draw was in Vicksburg? I had one of my collateral Hitch
lines who emigrated to Vicksburg in the 1830s. A son of this family fought
in the Civil War for the 21st Mississippi. Just before he set out to war,
he made a will (just shy of his 21st birthday) in April 1861, expecting not
to return from the battle field. In it, he mentions friends in "Newtown,
Eastern Shore of Maryland". This is modern-day Pocomoke City in Worcester
Co. This fellow, John Oscar Whittington Hitch, was killed at the Battle of
Malvern Hill in 1863, his prophecy fulfilled. Why did many folks migrate to
Vicksburg?
Thanks,
Mike Hitch

Some Virginians migrated to Vicksburg, MS in the early 1830's and later.
The
Warren County, MS coordinator has placed the above list online. She has no
other info. Here is address:

Hope you find someone you seek. Did notice a Stith.
Tom in TX.
