There's probably some of you out there who have Thorowgood connections and
also some who have worked to take surnames back to England and others who have
surnames on the "western shore" (Norfolk, VA). I have one of those "gut
feelings" and can use any help.

Lt. Thomas Keeling and his wife, Ann (1618-1688), came to the VA colony in
1634 on the "John & Dorothy." Capt. Adam Thorowgood was captain of the "John &
Dorothy." Thorowgood & Keeling were both merchants living in Norfolk Co. VA
and their descendants intermarried. Ann & Thomas Keeling named two of their
sons: Adam Keeling & Thorowgood Keeling.

In what little I know of naming patterns and traditions in the 1600's, Ann &
Thomas Keeling might have named one son for a friend or business partner &
neighbor, Adam Thorowgood; however, naming two sons after him, I feel, is
pushing it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but naming a child for an unrelated
person was more common in the late 1700's (?) and using the mother's maiden
name for a son was quite common in the 1600's??

Purse & Person called Adam Thorowgood the 7th son of William Throwogood
(1579-1625) and Anne Edwards. Vern Skinner has found the names of Adam's
brothers: Sir Edward, Sir John, Thomas, Edmund, William, Mordant, and half-
brother Robert and the name of one sister, Frances Thorowgood. (I find it
particularly odd that there were 8 boys and only 1 girl and it appears Frances
made it into the church records because of her marriage in 1611)

Does anyone have any little scrap which might help show any relationship
between Ann Keeling and Adam Thorowgood.....or anything about naming patterns
or traditions about 1630-40's

Much appreciated - Judy Stell
