Hi,
Calvin Bowen Taylor 1857-1932 went from Maryland to
Missouri as a lot of people from MD did. He married Martha
Collins in Hannibal, MO in 1886 and then they moved back
to Berlin, Maryland, to live. I have been trying to find out
why he may have gone to MO for awhile and came across
the following Bowens in the History of Marion Co., Missouri,
1884 and wondered if anyone knew if they might connect
with the Maryland Bowens -
Chapter XXX - City of Hannibal:
Page 895: "In 1833 therre were about fifty inhabitants, of whom the
following were heads of families" (long list, including "Samuel BOWEN".)
Page 899: "As early as 1839 Capt. Samuel A. BOWEN had a tobacco warehouse
here, and the county court appointed him the first tobacco inspector."
Page 931: "Among those who slipped out of Hannibal to join the army of Gen.
Price during the summer and early fall of 1861 were three young men, Ed
Stephens, Sam BOWEN and Samuel L Clemens, the latter now the great, if not
the greatest, American humorist 'Mark Twain'. (Note: Gen. Price was a
secessionist, ie: sypathetic to the Confederate cause - At this time
Hannibal was occupied by the Union army which is why secessionists had to
"slip out"). (Note this young Bowen couldn't be the same Bowen as
mentioned on pages 895 and 899)
My brother borrowed the book via interlibrary loan and these are the
references to Bowens that he found. Please contact me or the list if
you think you may know who they are. Thanks, Ed
