Some Accomack County Wills - 1600s

These are the two pages on which appear our ancestor John Fawset. I can't
give the book cite because I forgot to write it down. It's an index in the
usual abbreviated form. The book is in the Nabb Ctr collection.

To eldest son John planta. known as Gabriells or Watts Island. To sons
Walter & James Taylor planta. in Pocomoke River, Somersett County, Md,

MILBY, JOHN - 20 Jan. 1664-17 Apr. 1672 - To son John my thickett on the
main bay. To son Joseph land adj. his brother John known as the Long Neck.
To son Samuel land adj. his bro. Joseph. To son William the remainder of my
land adj. his bro. Samuel. "And tor my wife, seeing she hath been a very
cruel wife unto me" - Wife to receive no part of est. owing to her
behaviour subject to order of Court. Sons under 18. John Wise & John Powles

PITT, ROBERT - Adm. his est. to Devoras Browne upon the petition ot Tabitha
Browne, wife of sd. Devorax, in accordance with an order dated 16 June,
1670 - 19 Oct. 1672

qualification -1672 -

BROWNE, DEVORAS - Adm. his est to Tabith Browne, wid. of sd. Devoras;
Charles Scarburgh & Capt. Daniel Jenifer sec. 17 June 1673
Will presented but the Court decided that there was not sufficient evidence
and testimony that it was the real will and testament of the said decedent

STOCKLY, JOHN - 3 Feb. 1670 - 18 Aug. 1673 - Planta. at Assawonan, being
2700 A. to be equally divided between such sons as shall survive me, they
to receive their estates at 18, but should my wife remain a widow she to
have use of said land until my sons are 21. To wife Elizabeth planta. where
I now live during her widowhood, then to my son Thomas; should my sons all
die land to be divided between my daughters Jane, Hanna, Ann & Elizabeth. -

Thomas Bagwell - Memo: Having already given my 3 sons William, Woodman &
John their shares of cows & chattels, they to have no share of cows at my

LEATHERBURY, THOMAS - 3 July 1673 - 19 Aug. 1673 - To eldest son Charles
Leatherbury planta. where I now live after the death of my wife Ellenor,
reversion to my second son George Leatherbury. To my second son Perry
Leatherbury (under 21) 600 acres at Onancock Creek, also 300 A. adjoining
it & 1000 A. purchased of Capt. John West, reversion to son Charles - Wife

FAWSETT, JOHN - 15 Aug. 1673 - 16 Oct. 1673 - To eldest son John Fawsett
planta. where I now live - Wife Rhodeah to have use of same until John
arriving to 18 years. To son William (under 18) 1/2 of 500 A. & the other
1/2 to my son Charles (under 18). To son Thomas (under 18) & son Charles a
tract of land called James Neck purchased of John Cropper at the head of
Occahannock Creek, being 245 A. To dau. Elizabeth. Wife Exec. Mr. Thomas
Teackle & Mr. Southy Littleton to be assistants. Witt: Richard Kellam,

JOHNSON, RICHARD - 20 Nov. 1673 - 18 Feb. 1673 - To mother (no name) whole
est. during her life. To bro. Thomas Johnson. To bro. William Major. To
sister Elizabeth Johnson. Cousins William Finnie & Sarah Finnie. To the
children of my bro. Obedience Johnson. To cousin Elizabeth Rowles. Witt:

FOWKES, THOMAS - 10 Sept. 1673 - 18 May 1674 - To "neafew" Mary Ryle, dau.
of Ann, now Ann Miels formerly in the possession of Henry Ryle, not in the
custody of John Smally. To sister Ann Miells. To George, the eldest son of
John & Amy Parker. To Amy, dau. of Robert & Temperance Mason. "To each and
every grandchild of my wife's" To godchildren Rachel, dau. of Edward
Revell, Thomas, son of John Savage, to (blank) son of John Rogers, Thomas,
son of Ruth Bundick. Remainder of land where I now live, being 400 acres,
to George Parker after the death of my wife, should he die then to William
the third son of John & Amy Parker, & if he should die then to the heirs of
William Anderson. Wife Amy Exec. Witt: William Anderson, Isack Henman, John

OBEN, FULLCART - 22 Mar. 1663 - 16 July 1674 - Son Obedience (under 18).
Dau. Mary (under 16). Should my son die before the age of 18 my friend
Obedience Johnson to take him into his custody, & shcould Obedience Johnson
die then John Johnson to take him. Obedience Johnson & John Tomson

SMITH, WILLIAM - 15 July 1671 - 23 Feb. 1674 - To eldest son Thomas Smith
land where I now live "now largely expresst by Pattent". To each of my
children - No names - All under age. Wife Sarah resid. legatee & Exec.

PARKER, GEORGE - Feb. 1673 - 10 Oct. 1674 - To son George land where I
now live on the North side of Onancock - Wife to have use of same until son
reaches 21 years. To son John land on South side of Onancock. To son George
all my land in England. All arrearages of rents from said lands to my four
sons now living. To two youngest sons, Phillip & Charles, my other lands.

my 6 children, wife to have 1/3 and children 2/3 as they arrive to age.

BOWLES, THOMAS, of Ockahanock -20 June 1674 - 9 Nov. 1674 - "Whereas the
Lord hath blessed me with many children, six whereof I trust are living,
three sons & three daughters, viz:" William, the elder, Ann Bowles 2nd,
Elizabeth 3rd, Jane Bowles 4th, Edward Bowles 5th & Robert Bowles the
younger - To the first son or dau. who shall first arrive & come into this
county or Accomack in Virginia, 1/2 of a water mill at the head of
Occaanock Creek, with all the land & other appurenances, being between Mr.
Devorax Brown dec. & myself, Land at the head of Occahanock Creek. Should
two or more of my children come into this country at the same shipping the
eldest to be possessed of the said estate. Richard Bayley of Cradock Creek
& Arthur Robins or Matchipongo Extrs. to take in hand the land
