Great heads-up synopsis on researching sites. Now, I don't feel so
alone. I've had the same difficulties at these places as you have. I've
gone for day and ended up spending the night just to get the info.
One point of info about "Parking" at the Washington D.C. National
Archives. There is none for patrons (used to be--but not now).
However, if you are handicapped, there are 4 spaces on the side street
next to the Archive's Reference entrance--get there before it opens to
dock your car. As for street parking, read the signs! Its metered
parking and to my knowledge you can only deposit quarters for up to 2
hours. Be careful, I got a 50.00 ticket 4 years ago for 1 minutes over
the meter. Believe me, they will tow your car in a instant especially
right before the afternoon rush hour. The D.C. Tow Truck Drivers are
like vultures waiting for their prey. I bet they eat prime rib every
night for dinner. There is rather expensive parking lots for the day
several blocks away. Take your walking shoes. One more thing plan your
route in and out of D.C. and avoid the rush hour. The afternoon rush
begins to get heavy at 3:30 on normal days. And read the newspaper
before you go to make sure there is not a big event or protest planed
for the this area. If there is you may find any parking. And could save
yourself a big hassle. As for big events, the Last time I went I
accidentally pulled out (the light was green) in front of a circus
parade and almost got hit by an elephant. Yes, an elephant. This is
true! It took off running in between the parade leading police cars and
headed for my baby truck. It missed me by 6 feet. I vividly remember and
will never forget seeing the big eyes and a long snout out from the
corner of my eye. Realizing it was an elephant, I hit the metal to
peddle! Shocked and safe I had to pull over to a screeching halt to
count my marbles. Looking behind me I saw the loose elephant running up
the road as well as a parade of more elephants, Lamas, horses, donkeys .
. .. The circus had come to town. Yes, these are the things we do to
to keep our heritage alive and living in the 21st Century. Are we
crazy---naaa we are rich in family heritage. And that 50.00 ticket; it
was worth it for the information I got on my ggg grandfather. And that
elephant, well if I had gotten crushed by it, I just think of the great
genealogy footnote I would had gotten in my family history and the
laughter of my future relatives.
