I had great luck with my great grandfather's military records. We knew that
he had been discharged, then re-enlisted, but did not know why until
receiving these records. It listed the hospitals he stayed in and why as all
the discharge papers were included. Also included the enlistment papers,
which gave physical descriptions as well as address. We now know what his
job was upon re-enlistment due to these papers. I requested the pension
papers separately, which arrived about a month later than the military
papers. I'd been told these are the "gold mine" of information, but my
particular file did not tell me anything new. There was one cute thing on
the pension application, where it was asked as to whether he and his wife
were married, separated, or divorced - he wrote "married, never been
separated, never will, until death." It was just a sweet thing to read that
in his hand-writing.
