Thanks, Niel for adding the origin of the fee. The
modern concept remains the same, though, in my mind,
because the government requires the transfer tax,
thereby its cut. Do we really own our land? If one
does not pay one's property taxes to the
government(akin to the Calvert's (the government)land
rent), the property is sold on the courthouse steps to
the highest bidder, with the back taxes being paid
first.
I'm sure everyone has seen on the Calvert Rent Rolls
the language that certain lands were escheated and
assigned to someone else (who would pay the rent
[taxes]. This was for nonpayment of rent, i.e.
property taxes. In my mind, we currently do the same
thing, just a different government which is "of the
people" as opposed to the Calverts. A tax is a tax is
a tax. (:) Can you tell I don't like taxes?)
