Dear Listers:

Knowing what a knowledgeable group there is on this list, I hope someone can
explain to me the land system in early Maryland. I know a man received land
for transporting people (even himself) into the colony. Then what did he
have to do to have the land patented? And who named the land?

I am specifically concerned with the tract MORTLOCK which was patented on 4
Nov 1668 by William Stevens who assigned to James Henderson for 500 acres in
Pitts Creek. Would Stevens or Henderson have named the tract? Cause for
concern is whether the name might be a clue as to the overseas origin of
James Henderson.

Thanks for any help.

Donna
