Would any of you researchers/genealogists know if there was a practice of
using the mother's maiden name when an individual did not have a middle
name of his own? For instance, I have been researching a Richard Waters
of Somerset County. All the records I have located in Maryland refer to
him as Richard of William (his father). However, later I located several
records of a Richard Hayward Waters in Missouri and Illinois who I
believe to be the same person. Richard's mother's name was Sarah
Hayward. Would this be a logical conclusion to reach? Thanks for your
opinions, thoughts, etc.
