Dear Betty:
Below is some info on William CLAIBORNE/CLAYBORNE that I happened to have
here at home.
In the book, "A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature,
1635-1789, Vol. 1: A-H," By: Papenfuse, Day, Jordan and Stiverson, the
following is noted about William CLAIBORNE:
"CLAIBORNE, William (1600-ca - 1677).
BORN: in 1600 in Crayaford Parish, Kent, England; second son.
Immigrated: on Kent Island in 1627, but never settled permanently in
Maryland.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: brought three servants with him when he migrated to
Virginia in 1621; he arrived in Virginia as a provincial officer and began
acquisition of land in 1624; he led an expedition up the Chesapeake Bay in
1627 and established a trading base on Kent Island, which he actively
developed in the next decade; he returned to England 1630-1631 and
1647-1650.
FAMILY BACKGROUND:
FATHER: Thomas CLAYBORNE (ca. 1557-1607), of Kent, England, the mayor of
King's Lynn, Norfolk, England in 1592, and a merchant; son of Thomas
CLAYBORNE (? - 1581), the mayor of King's Lynn, Norfolk, England in 1573,
and a merchant.
MOTHER: Sara (? - 1627), widow of Roger JAMES, a brewer of London, England;
daughter of John SMITH, a brewer of Southwark, England.
BROTHER: Thomas (1599 - ?).
HALF-BROTHERS: Sir Roger JAMES; John JAMES.
SISTERS: Sara; Katherine; and Blanche.
HALF-SISTERS: Sara JAMES; Margaret JAMES.
MARRIED: By 1635 to Elizabeth BOTELER (ca. 1611 - after 1668), daughter of
John BOTELER, of Roswell, Essex, England, and wife Jane ELLIOTT; niece of
Capt. Nathaniel BOTELER, governor of Bermuda and Providence Island. Her
brothers were John BOTELEER (ca. 1601-1642); Thomas BOTELER.
CHILDREN:
SONS: William (1636-?), a burgess of New Kent County, Virginia, from 1660 to
1676, who married Elizabeth WILKES; Thomas (1647-1681), who married Sarah,
daughter of Samuel FENN; Leonard (ca. 1649-?), who moved to Jamaica; and
John.
DAUGHTER: Jane (1638 -?) who married ca. 1658 Thomas BRERETON, of
Northumberland, Virginia.
PRIVATE CAREER:
EDUCATION: Literate; admitted to Pembroke College, Cambridge University,
1617.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: placeman; merchant by 1631, with a one-sixth interest
in a joint stock venture with William CLOBERRY and Maurice THOMPSON for
trading operations in the Chesapeake Bay; planter.
PUBLIC CAREER. PROVINCIAL OFFICE: commissioner of Parliament for Maryland
1651-1657/58.
OUT OF COLONY OFFICES: Virginia: surveyor, 1621; Council, 1624-1660 (deputy
governor, 1652-1660); secretary, 1626-1634, 1652-1661; commander of Kent
Isle, 1631; treasurer, 1642-by 1650; general and chief commander of Virginia
forces, 1644; commissioner of Parliament for Virginia, 1651-1660; colonel,
by 1653.
STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: battled with the proprietary forces from
1634 to the 1660s for control of Kent Island; he was the most persistent
opponent of Lord Baltimore's claims in the Chesapeake Bay area.
WEALTH DURING LIFETIME: LAND - Over 1,600 acres in Virginia; pateneted over
20,600 acres during his lifetime.
WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: Ca. 1677; size of estate unknown."
Also In the book, "American Colonists in English Records" by George
Sherwood, In the Principal Probate registry, London, the following is noted:
"1627, Oct 12 -
"CLAYBORNE, William - scrivener, witness" to will of Sir George YARDLEY, in
James Citty, Virginia. - Page 9
"1638, A.D. - "(in the public record office, London; High Court of
Admiralty)
CLEYBOURNE, William, of Virginia, Esq., deposes"
"1746, May 16 -
CLAIBORNE, William, of Virginia, at present in London, merchant, confirms
his will made in Virginia." - Page 182
