Dear Janet:
Good to hear from you. In many cases, the taxes were somewhat the
same, land, property--taxables-- heads in the household, ordinary licenses,
you name it. But in Maryland the taxes and "duties" were more, as there
were a lot of fees, what not that went directly into the pockets of the
Calvert family. The rent rolls are a case in point. The quit rents
due--which were annual rents assessed on land--went directly into the
coffers of the Calverts. Also levied, were duties assessed per hogshead of
tobacco shipped from Maryland which went to the Calverts. There was a great
deal of animosity over these duties, and how they were to be used. The
lower house of the assembly and the upper house (which was the Prerogative
COurt as well, and were Calvert appointees) regularly tangled over the
duties assessed on tobacco.
I will be back to you in a bit on more of the same.
