Ahh, Neil I keep forgetting that control of Maryland real was in many sense
like that of some English Duke, Earl, etc. who collected "rents" from his
tenants....and I guess for practical purposes our Somerset, etc., ancestors
were just a step above that tenant position???

What about after the Revolution though...1790, 1800, etc. Were there still a
different array of fees than in Virginia...more than just personal property
tax and then land/real estate taxes?

Finally, in the post that prompted the reply I promised to email Steve &
Bunny Binns who maintain the website with the images of the 1790 and 1800
county personal and land tax lists for VA re Accomac and Northampton. They
told me they were already thinking about it...doing one on the far east (ie,
the shore) and one on the far west (ie, now WVA) and one up north.

They will be filming the Accomac sets of tax lists in the near future, and
putting them up on their website here:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ysbinns/vataxlists/

I'll keep you posted.
