Barbara, It may be that your ancestor did not serve in any military capacity
and the marker may denote him as a patriot of that war. I don't know what
the marker is, but in the case of the National Society United States
Daughters of 1812 whose emblem is a star in a circle over an anchor with USD
1812,
the organization requires that the person served in a capacity with the
military, government or civil, or even as a clergyman who preached for the
cause. This is not an exclusive list. There are many other categories.
This service could have been anytime from 1784 through 1815.
