Could someone explain to me the connection that godson/godchild would have
meant back in the late 1600's ? I understand what it means now, but in some
of my research I catch a suggestion that godson could mean a nephew back
then. For instance on the website www.esva.net/ghotes under the Scarburgh
history is this notation:

29iv. Littleton Scarburgh......was named a godson of Ann (Southy)
Littleton.....this could imply that she was his aunt and that Ann's husbandl,
Nathaniel Littleton, would have been a brother to Mary (Littleton)
Scarburgh.....

Any thoughts or rules on this would be appreciated....
