Watch for transcription errors and/or creative spellings, as we've
been discussing.
Also, because there's so much marshland on the south and west parts
of Delmarva, you could have "islands" which appear not to be, but
were actual solid ground surrounded by marsh which could indeed be
impassable at certain times of the year or during higher tides.
For example, Kent Island was barely an island until the gov't dredged
a channel at the Narrows; on old maps the spot where the bridge now
is was called "the wading place".
Saxis VA is another similar example. It's not really an island in the
sense of, say, the Isle of Man. And it was originally Sykes',
speaking of deviant spellings. Try saying Sykes's with a Virginia
accent.
