I have conducted extensive county level research in
both MD and VA. I find it much easier to research at
the Hall of Records in Annapolis that at individual
counties throughout Virginia.

Most older records for counties for MD can be found at
the Hall of Records. In VA you usually end up having
to travel from one county courthouse to another.
Fortunately, some of the older VA records are being
transcribed and put in book form.

The key to the MD Hall of records is going in person,
being organized, and being informed ahead of time. If
the staff is too busy to give a personal tour and help
with filling out record requests and reading
microfilm, you may want to ask a fellow genealogist
for some guidance.

I don't like the budget cuts, but I love the Maryland
Hall of Records.
