Subject: [LDR] HUDSON sisters? Hudson cousins? Married Still brothers.
Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 11:16:11 EDT

My great-grandfather was George Joseph Still. Two of his brothers married
women whose last names were Hudson. I know little about them. In the hopes
that someone else will connect to them and have more information, here is
what I know.

Irene W. Hudson (b. June 12, 1867, Milford (? county), DE; d. Oct. 9, 1949,
Milford, Sussex Co., DE; bur. Oct. 12, 1949, I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Milford, Kent
Co., DE).
married in the year between June 1886 and June 1887 to:
Alexander Still (b. Oct. 10, 1867, DE; d. between 1920 and 1949,
prob. Milford, DE.)

Notes: Alexander's and Irene's tombstones are listed in Dill's "Souls in
Heaven; Names in Stone," page 1304. Both stones have only birth dates
inscribed on them. I have found Irene's death certificate in the Delaware
archives (certificate 2736, 1949). She is listed as a widow. Her burial
location is listed as the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Milford, Kent Co., DE.
They are also listed in several census lists. The last one I found
them in was the 1930 census (Hence, my assertion that Alexander died between
1920 and 1949 when his wife died.)
In 1900, they lived on Mispillion St. in Milford, Sussex Co., DE.
Alexander was an oysterman.
In 1910, they lived at 800 East Front St. (now S.E. Front St.),
Milford, Sussex Co., DE. Alexander is listed as a fisherman. The census
also states that each was in their first marriage and that they had been
married for 23 years (the source for my estimate of their marriage).
In 1920, they lived at 307 East Front St. (now S.E. Front St.).
Alexander is now listed as a bridge builder. It might be interesting to some
to note that all four Still brothers lived in houses that were all adjacent
-- next door or across the street from each other -- and that a probable
son-in-law of one of them lived in that cluster of homes as well.
In 1930, they still lived at 307 East Front St. and Alexander, age 63,
is listed as doing odd jobs -- fishing, oyster, and roadwork.
They had two children for certain -- Charles and Alexander (b. March
1887).
In the 1900 census, Charles is listed as age 11, born Oct. 1888. The
1910 census is very difficult to read -- it appears that Charles' age is
listed as 29 which would be make him too old to be the child of Irene and
Alexander. Therefore, the second most likely number listed for his age is
likely the correct one -- age 21. Based on this information, Charles would
have been born in 1888 or 1889. This would concur with the information on
the 1900 census. Charles is also listed in the WWI Civilian Draft
Registration. His year of birth in that record, however, is 1889. That
record lists his full birth date as October 19, 1988, and his birthplace as
Milford, DE. He registered in the Sussex Co. draft.
In the 1900 census, Alexander is listed as age 13, born March 1887.
There is possibly another son named Daniel, but not likely since he is
never found on a census list with the family. Yet, Daniel Still provided the
information for Irene's death certificate, a task most often handled by a
close family member. Irene's husband had no brothers named Daniel Still, and
thus far, it appears that they did not have any children named Daniel. There
are cousins of Alexander that I have not yet tied down, so it is possible
that Irene's death information came from a cousin. Another possibility is
that Alexander and Daniel are the same person. Given that his father was
named Alexander as well, perhaps Alexander (II) was called by his second
given name which we have not yet found in any records. (Given that
Alexander's brothers George, Harry, and William all had middle names, it
seems likely that Alexander did as well, and certainly possible that his full
name was passed down to his oldest son. This, clearly, is all speculation.)
In the 1920 and the 1930 census, Alexander and Irene had a
granddaughter named Clara B. Still living with them. In 1920 she is listed
as age 7, in 1930, she is listed as age 19. She and her mother are listed as
being born in NJ. Her father is listed as being born in Delaware.

According to her death certificate, Irene (Hudson) Still's parents are
William Hudson and Nancy (Marker) Hudson.

Alexander Still's brother William H. Still married Martha Ella Hudson.
On their marriage bond dated May 11, 1889 (from the Delaware
archives), William's wife-to-be is listed as Ellie Hudson. On the 1910 and
1920 census lists, she is listed as Ella. On the 1930 report, she is listed
as Ella W. However, on her funeral records which are held by Lofland Funeral
Home in Milford, Delaware, her maiden name is listed as Martha E. Hudson; the
informant was her son William H. Still (who apparently had a different middle
name as he was never known as Jr. and his son was).
Ella's birthdate was Nov. 1870, according to the 1910 census. I have
not finished transcribing the Lofland funeral records and have not yet
recorded the birth and death dates listed on those documents. (And since we
have just moved from Salt Lake to Minneapolis, they are still hidden away
somewhere in a box!) If you are interested in that information, let me know
and I will send it to you when I am able to get back to recording the
information.
Ella and William had four children and maybe a fifth. The four known
children are:
Lydia A. Still, b. May 1891. She married an unknown Gillespie.
William Henry Still, b. Dec. 3, 1893; d. Jan. 6, 1966. He married
Elizabeth Mae Arment (b. Jan. 11, 1902; d. Apr. 7, 1960).
Kathryn A. Still, b. July 6, 1927; d. Aug. 27, 1997. She married an
unknown Ney.
Roy M. Still, b. July 28, 1930, d. Oct. 28, 1993. His wife is still
living.

Ella and William also had a grandson named Paris Warrington, age 14,
who is listed as living with them. Living across the street from them and
next to William's brother George is a James Warrington with a wife named May
and a son name Paris, age 13. Since this Warrington family is living in the
Still cluster of homes, and since he works as a cook in a restaurant
(possibly the restaurant owned by William's and Alexander's brother George),
it seems highly possible that Paris in the Warrington family and Paris
Warrington listed living with Ella and William are the same person, despite
the age descrepancy.
In that case, who is May, the wife of James? Was there a third Still
daughter? Could May be the step-mother of Paris? Were either Kathryn or
Lydia married to James before they married Gillespie and Ney? Oh, the
puzzles!!

So far, I have no information on Ella's parents. It would not have been
uncommon, however, at the time of their marriages, for brothers to marry
sisters or for brothers to marry cousins.

Can anyone place William and Nancy (Marker) Hudson, parents of Irene W.
(Hudson) Still?
Can anyone place Irene W. (Hudson) Still who married Alexander Still?
Can anyone place Martha Ella (Hudson) Still who married William H. Still?
