What a difference a day makes.
A lady from Princess Anne was kind enough to send me a note regarding
the headstone of Edgar's son Vador E Pusey. I had always thought the
"E" stood for Edgar, but actually it was Elzey or Elsey.
Months ago I had come across an Edgar Elzey in the household of
William W Powell (Whittington Powell and Julia Trehearn his second
wife). Edgar was designated as his grandson.
Looks like Whittington (abt1806 - <1900) and Hester (1806-<1870)
Powell's daughter Martha W. Powell married George W Pusey , son of
Nathaniel Pusey and Elizabeth Smulling. George and Martha married in
1866 but I cannot find them in 1870 when Whittington and Julia are
living alone. Nathaniel Pusey is a near neighbor to Whittington
Powell in 1850, 1860, and 1870 as I recall.
The Mary Taylor who lives next door to Edgar Pusey in 1900 and the
two Taylors in his household, combined with him farming 120 acres and
she farming none, leads me to believe that this widow is Whittington
Powell's daughter Mary who must have married a Taylor.
That George and Martha Powell Pusey apparently died so young,
(perhaps he preceding her and then she in childbirth) , as did Edgar,
would explain why no one so far can remember him or how he was
connected.
However I was told by one person that he believed that Edgar was the
brother of Addy (Adeline) Pusey and that they both were somehow
connected to Gordy Pusey (b-1859). Adeline "Addy" Pusey was actually
the sister of both Gordon "Gordy" Pusey and George who married Martha
Powell.
Of course it would help seal the deal to find out that Whittington
Powell's first wife Hester had Elzey as a maiden name.
It seems to me that the person who spoke with the enumerator, as many
people used to do, referred to Edgar either by his first and middle
name, or the enumerator simply didn't bother with the last name. I
have had an apple out of that barrel before when my great grandfather
Livingston was living in the household of his older sister and was
included under the name of her husband.
It's funny that I was suspicious of this Edgar so long ago. He was
the only Edgar I could find in the 1880 census (before LDS indexed it
no less) that was exactly the right age and in the right place.
