My apologies for not pasting in the examples on parish processioning records
done by the church not county (at the end this time!). There is no other way
to describe the below (in my opinion), but that they were a double check on
residents, taxes (primary), deeds and patents (when conducted correctly and tax
records. I think they represent the epitome of the conjunction between church
and state...etc.etc...and are a piece of what the Revolution was all about.
The loss of parish records (especially Hungars and I don't know what other
parishes in the region now Appomac), is a significant losss for researchres, like
the loss of burned county records. The parishes also dealt with payments for
bastards/indigents, etc.
But since Accomac/Northampton have basically so many records otherwise in
tact, the loss of parish records on the Eastern Shore isn't felt as keenly as in
burned counties. They also recorded births, deaths, marriages, etc.
On the other hand, I have some parish records for Nansemond Co., which is
courthouse burned, which at least have some names on processioning records, etc.
My best, Janet Hunter
Below you will see some example for the Southam Parish register (FYI, John
Hyde/Hide Saunders is my 4g grandfather and was the parish minister of this
parish for a long time, even though he was formally expelled from the College of
William & Mary, after refusing to go quietly). You can follow these with below
deeds. (Powhatan/Cumberland Co...now bedroom community for Richmond CITY).
These are draft excerpts from a book that has since been published
