Wow thanks everyone for the wonderful responses. Now I think we are
getting somewhere! Need time to absorb information. And that was a
wonderful summary of Gertrude/Rhoda etc. Another one of my ancestors
married as his second wife a similarly licentious woman - Ann Gray wife
of Miles Gray - was whipped every month for a year for fornication and
bastard bearing in Accomac county in the 1660's - Miles disowned her and
moved to Somerset County - the courts of both Accomack and Somerset were
involved... Somehow she was able to marry John Abbott Sr. after the
death of his wife (Miles Gray was still living in Somerset at the time)
from Md. Archives: ~ These Certify that some time in the year 63 or 64
