You will be happy to know that I have located the Littleton P. Tilghman
graveyard. Since Sunday was a sunny day; but a bit breezy, I decided to
check out the graveyard I see everytime I travel Rt. 50, east of Salisbury,
MD. I knew that the land it was on was once part of a larger tract of land
owned by the Tilghman family and that Merrit Mill Rd. ran behind the
It is visible from Rt. 50, East, just before you approach the bypass, to the
left. Located between the DMV and the Microtel Motel, it is surrounded by
some trees, but clearly visible from the highway year round. Wendy's and
Denny's Restaurants are across Rt. 50, as well as K Mart. The road at the
traffic light there, at McDonald's, that crosses Rt. 50 is Tilghman Rd.
I have often wondered if any Tilghmans were buried there, so your inquiry
encouraged me to check it out. (Years before the land was sold that the
Microtel is situated on, there was an old farm house that was a Tilghman
home. My husband and I visited friends there who were renting it when they
were first married. The house was torn down when the land was sold.)
I counted 8 gravesites: some of which were those of children. The three
family names represented on the tombstones were Riggin, Littleton, and
Tilghman. All of the inscriptions were not readable, but I did my best at
writing down what I could see. Dates ranged from 1826 to 1933 on the various
tombstones. It was difficult to read some of the inscriptions, due to the
aging process. I wrote down the names and dates that I could read; some of
which I am not certain. If you are interested in more information, you can
contact me off list.
