Eva,
I am looking for more concrete info on William Barkley Townsend (of DE/MD) and son Barkley Townsend (Worcester Co, MD). I need a wife for them both and their children. Peter Townsend is a son of Barkley. I need his birth, death, marriage documents, or anything else that might to prove the lineage. Peter's wife was Sarah Marshall Purnell. Sarah's mother was Elizabeth Marshall, her father Thomas Purnell. I don't have much on the Marshall family, only what came through the mail that was attached to the Purnell info that I was sent. The Purnells are quite documented but in my search I have found much conflicting information. I know there are possible Ennis/Innis and White surnames mixed up in there somewhere. I have no clue as to where any of these people are buried, or if they can even be found now. I have many land records (that's how I found that William Barkley and Barkley were father and son) , Barkley's Will but no Will for his father William Barkley Townsend. It seems
that many authors are confusing these two men. I have Tax records, census, receipt list for goods sold during the Revolution to the MD Governor for food for the Militia, and copies of pages from books written about these families and their military involvement. But, some authors have only cited info not including the actual documentation to back up their claim. I have found so much "inaccurate' info just by going back and forth between the materials. So now I only trust documents!!! And even their transcriptions have been misreported. What to do???? Any documentation is welcomed and I am very willing to share!
Thank you so much!
Marsi

Just as a matter of adding a tidbit to the significance of Rehoboth (on the
Pocomoke) in Somerset history, it was the original homesite of Col. William
Stevens - one of the most visible and active of the founding fathers of the
county. He obtained the survey on 18 Jul 1665 for 1000 acres titled REHOBOTH,
patented for him on 20 Feb 1665/6, "on the north side of and by the Pocomoke
River side in Pungateegue Fields". As time went on, of course, it became the site
of Rehoboth Town and Coventry Parish Church.

As John Polk points out, Stevens, whatever his own persuasion, was
egalitarian on religious matters, having encouraged the Ulster immigration in the early
1680s.

His warrant rights for this 1000 ac are themselves fascinating: "to William
Stevens for transporting himself and Elizabeth Stevens his wife, Thomas
Phillips and Robert Moore (200 ac) + 250 ac by assignment from Richard Whitty for
transport of Richard White et ux. Elizabeth White, Ann Fisher, George Phebus and
Patience Locker + 550 ac by assignment of Ann Hack, widow, for transport of
Jacob Cloyse, William Clarke, Thomas Dab, John Seaman, William Seaman, Simon
Carpe, Elizabeth Lent, Paul Sereeke, Morgan Abraham, James Fereby and Ann
German".

Several of the folks on this list were among the well-known ancient actors in
Somerset, along with a bunch of surely indentured servants, etc.

John
