Betty is right 'scrubbing' old stones (or any stones
for that matter) can damage them. The Association for
Gravestone Studies has a FAQ page where you can read
about how to properly clean tombstones.
Rule #1: the least invasive method is always the first
you try and Rule #2: if you don't have a source of
running water (or tons of bottled water) it's not a
good idea to do any cleaning at all since whichever of
the approved methods you use must be rinsed off
thoroughly.
