"After ownership of the islands was decided, Shotter sold out in 1875
and went to the mainland, eventually to Douglas, Alaska. The purchasers
of the lime kiln were Daniel McLachland and Robert Caines of Port
Townsend. Ephraim LANGELL, a Nova Scotia quarryman was induced by
Caines to move to Orcas to work at Port Langdon. Like so many of the
islanders, Langell had been to the Cariboo. His sons, in time, became
the oldest residents of Orcas."
