I am going through 5 digest worth before making any further comments.

being ADDED for us--nothing is being taken away!

I say: My foot! Redundant, Duplicate and UNwanted mailing lists and
GenConnect boards being added.
(Coombs-Combs, Aldrich-Aldridge (I manage), Runyan-Runion-Runyen,
Bowles-Boles, Burch-Birch-Burtch (I manage), etc)

2. Joan Young wrote: (in very next message)
I wouldn't want some new person coming out of left field (pun
intended) and saying THEY want to consolidate MY Field list into THEIR
brand new Fielder list.

I say: Huh?

3. Andrew Billinghust wrote: (in response to Rick)
I suppose in response, the comments would always be 1) Yes RootsWeb is
after new listowners and also old listowners who have the time

I say:
What? After I divested myself of 3 surname lists and few regional
lists so I can have time on the remaining 12 lists (2 surname and 10
regional), you are saying Rootsweb is asking for OLD listowners who
have time? Hey, I have at least 5 very high volume regional lists to
worry over with subscribers between 700 and 1,100 per list.

4. You will notice that nobody is talking about other resources at
all. It is because they aren't duplicated or redundant just like
mailing lists and GenConnect boards are under this "insane plan".

5. Poland-L and Poland-Roots-L as regional list? (don't you dare go
around my back and activate Poland-L for that reason). I opted for
Poland-Roots long time ago to clearly mark it as a regional rather
than surname.

6. James Shuman wrote:
And I'll cast my vote against this unwarranted proliferation of new
Discussion Lists and Message Boards, especially for those of us who
are
still in the process of trying to get our suite of Surname offerings
established!

I say: Aye!

7. I am aware of the "mailing lists" at Familysearch.org site and
there are two lists pertaining only to ONE person's family. One had 30
subscribers - NOT one message and the way those lists are structured,
I don't think anyone can understand the rules there at all.

8. The Genconnect's current rule is that only 4 variants per surname!
Heck, Eichelberger has more than 15-20-25 variants alone and all
traced back to only one spelling - Eichelberger in Germany. Now with
this Surname Resources - I do NOT want a mailing list for that REASON,
neither are my cousins either. GenConnect is enough headache for that.
With the availability of this resources - that will create headaches
for me at least 10 time fold just for Eichelberger.

8. What it boils down....
suspend the site, http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/ and postpone
the announcement and RETHINK through the process of what went wrong in
first place and do it right in area of mailing lists and associated
GenConnect boards (already noting problems arising over at GenConnect)
