Whose to say it is a spelling error? It could very will be that
there are 2 entirely different families here.

I can see it happening where the names are spelled differently, but are
pronounced the same: Pruett/Pruitt/Pruit/Prewitt/Prewett
or Manar/Maynor/Mainer/Mainor etc. But when they are pronounced
differently, I have to wonder.
