I choose to disagree. I'm subscribed to 17 surname lists and 12 locality
lists. If virus warnings (even verified ones) were appropriate to these
lists, I'd be SWAMPED (and have been) with hundreds of messages about a
single virus. You get the first message, then 3 or 4 responses saying
"yes, this is true, I saw it on 20-20", then the messages get forwarded to
other lists (of course with nobody trimming the superfluous text from any
of the messages) ...
And you get my point.
There are *MANY* other appropriate venues to hear about virus warnings. If
someone is serious about staying informed, he/she can join a virus mailing
list.
On the lists that I administer, *ONLY* subject matter pertinent to the
topic of the list (the surname or locality) is appropriate. If a
subscriber disagrees, he or she is welcome to unsubscribe and find another
place for the off-topic discussions.
Otherwise, I'm truly a hands-off administrator. I take care of bounces and
lost subscribers. I do not attempt to answer unanswered questions. If
none of the other subscribers does so, then the question remains
outstanding. (I'm not an expert on these subjects, anyway.) The list is a
place for researchers to meet and exchange information; it is not a forum
for me to show my expertise. In fact, I tend to participate more actively
in those lists that I do NOT adminster. <grin>

Elsi
