Well since you chose to examine one of my list I suppose that I should
comment about your summation. I adopted the (R)adcliff list about a year ago
since I was a member of the list and the owner of the list needed to reduce
the amount of list administration that she was performing. I was honored to
have her pick me to turn over the rains to. I will say this about your
comments of writing a blurb about the other naming conventions of the
(R)adcliff surname. You assume that you are dealing with people that not
able to discern what a surname list is about. I assume that I am dealing
with people that are researching their family history. Inasmuch I assume
that they understand what the (R)adcliff list is for. I have not experienced
anything to tell me different. The list is a bit on the slow side and that
is expected since the (R)adcliff surname is relatively rare. There is some
coordination between the list since most of the members are members of all
of the variant surname list but by having the variant list it makes it much
easier to separate and keep track of all of the different lines of the
surname. All list have a purpose and are a value to the study of ones family
history. We all have decided to take an active role in helping all
researchers to benefit from this wonderful service. It is all about a
difference in opinion here and my opinion is that my list members know why
they are subscribed to this particular list.

Some comments of Name Variation Lists;

I checked on the Radcliff, Radcliffe, Ratcliff and Ratcliffe List
posting on the Rootsweb List Page. I think no one will disagree that
these are variations of the same name. However none of the family lists
have any blurb to tell the potential subscriber what the list is about.
All they do is refer to the list administrator.
