Hi, everybody:

In my experience, I have far more trouble with addresses that come from
AOL, or seem to, than I do with addresses that come from Yahoo!, or seem to.

In my personal, biased, opinion as a computer professional with some
expertise in communications, AOL is *NOT* a real Internet service, and I
regard it as one of the greatest long-term threats to free genealogy on the
'net. Those poor souls that have been seduced into using AOL would be
better off if we forced them to start using "real" ISPs.

Based on the above, one might think that I would be in favor of a RootsWeb
global ban on **.aol.com addresses. Of course I am not. And that doesn't
even include the issue of whether the addresses are forged.

The main problem is, the suggested Yahoo! ban just won't stop the people we
want to stop, and will stop a lot of others. That is why it is a bad, bad,
bad idea.

I think a better idea would be to tighten up RootsWeb's programming to
better prevent malformed subscription messages, or spam, from creating
subscriptions to our lists.

Just my opinion. Others of good will and intelligence may differ.

Darrell
