It would appear that many of the addresses that fall under CoreCom's umbrella are
being blocked. I called their service line today and was told that many users
complained that Rootsweb was sending them Spam. They did not elaborate on what type of
spam this was but that it would not have been just a handful of users but a
substantial enough number for them to issue a block against all Rootsweb mailings.
I was told that if the Postmaster for Rootsweb contacts them using whatever provider
was involved or just @core.com, that they would work to resolve the issue. The problem
is what do these people consider spam being sent by Rootsweb? The offers for free 14
day Ancestry.Com trials or the messages mentioning products available through
Ancestry? I have used the unsubscribe that came with these mailings and was not
bothered again which leads me to believe that most of those that complained are novice
users that subscribed to a list or two and are now getting a lot of email they don't
know what to do with and don't want. They only wanted to find the birth date for Uncle
Melvin and don't care about other people's research, so they complain to their ISP as
they probably not aware they joined a mailing list in the first place. Believe me, I
have seen it happen on a few of my lists.
I have sent messages to the Rootsweb Postmaster and hope they are on top of the
problem and if not, then maybe they are paying attention here and will see that many
of use are getting frustrated with the increase in providers blocking Rootsweb because
of the revenue producing advertisements that are more than likely a mandate from
MyFamily.com's marketing department, the same people who bring us those wonderful
pop-ups and pop-unders. By the way, I have upgraded my Netscape Communicator to the
latest version and those problems disappeared. I now see no pop-ups or di they go away
for everyone and the timing of the upgrade coincided with a fix?
I don't think it will help if people bombard the postmaster at CoreCom with complaints
about the bounces. The more we complain the more they may choose to ignore us and the
problem will never be resolved. CoreCom is also experiencing some problems with their
mail servers and nothing is getting through, which they say will be fixed soon (is
that soon in human years or programmer years?). Better to let the Rootsweb Postmaster
handle this one. Are you listening postmaster?
