This is a great suggestion. I have, at times, been subbed on digest mode to
cut down on the sheer number of messages. Now, I am on list mode and have
numerous filters in place on OE. When I have time I read every post. When
I am short of time I scan the subject headers and home in on posts that
interest me at the time or that are from staff members. This way I am
confident that I will not miss anything I need to know about. And there
certainly is a lot that I need to know about!(vbg)
I may not post very often but I do thoroughly enjoy "lurking."

the threads and often delete whole digests after reading the largest email
on a topic (this will often mean the original email is there as well as
reply. If there is an thread that captures your attention, then you are
able to read each post.
