I have been looking for a constructive solution to the dilemma of strict
administrative rules vs some leeway for subscribers. Let's look at this situation
from a subscriber's point of view for a moment. Perhaps she is subscribed to
twenty different lists. Each one of the twenty list administrators has the
ability to set different rules. About fourteen of the lists have the same
rules. Three of the other lists are the peach butter recipe type but they are
small and the messages can be briefly reviewed. Two of the remaining lists have
stricter rules but they are rules the subscriber believes in anyway, like no
interminable sig files with coy quotations. The twentieth list is run by a
male thinking type who offends female subscriber feeling types and vice versa.
In that case, the most pleasant solution for all is for the subscriber to
unsubscribe from the list, post to the boards and read the mailing list archives.
No sturm and drang, just a way to handle the disparity of approaches to life
and genealogical research. Comments?
