Does anyone have ideas about how to handle this? Would doing more be
appropriate, e.g., having the thread deleted from the archives?
Thanks for your comments.
Since you admin the surname list, it is really up to you how you want to
handle this as to what is and isn't allowed on your list.
Personally, I'd drop a note to the person posting this information and let
that person know that this isn't normally a matter that would be discussed on
the list because of privacy issues. I'd ask if the person would be willing
to have the posts that give out too much information about the living person
removed from the list archives. If the poster agrees, have them (or you)
check the both archives and copy down the URLs of the posts in both archives and
then submit them to the archives removal forms. The poster will need to
reply to the confirmation email they will receive in order for the posts to be
actually deleted. Make sure they understand they must click on the link in
that confirmation email to accomplish removal.
If you the posts are bad enough to request removal even if the poster
doesn't agree to requesting it--then YOU can submit the requests yourself but will
need to let the HelpDesk know they need to bypass the poster's confirmation
