I was always told that yes the original poster has copyright but as list

I subscribe to this policy when it comes to copyright (that only the
copyright holder can complain about infringement and we are not the list police and
shouldn't be assuming our posters are violating copyright), and I'm
reasonably tolerant of someone copying an "I need all the help I can get" type list
post to another list because there is kind of an assumption that the person
really doesn't mind where who reads it--they just want help. But I do tend to
contact posters privately who copy data posts from other lists when I see them
saying something like "I saw this on another list and wanted to pass it
along to every list I'm on" -- partly because it is spam and partly because if it
probably off-topic for my list <G> but also because it SOUNDS as if the
poster is saying they didn't ask permission to copy it (if it is something that
can be copyrighted). Even if it isn't something that can be copyrighted--I
think if the original poster spent a lot of time transcribing the data it is
"nice" if the person copying the data asks the original poster if they mind it
being copied to another relevant list. Usually they don't mind, and once
asked and attribution is given to the author/transcriber, then I don't mind it
being copied with that notation.
