What I do, without naming any names, is send a general message to the
list about whatever the topic is, most often posting their snail mail
and phone or those of others. It says we should not do this and even
when you take it off list you have to be careful; just because you met
someone on this list doesn't mean they can be trusted as anyone can
subscribe. I remind them that non subscribers can read the archives.
Etc. It generally works. No fingers are pointed and it puts the
responsibility on them.

Beyond that, you not only have no responsibility to deal with the problem; you need to carefully AVOID any entanglement in the conflicts, whatsoever. That is especially true as you (even as a volunteer) represent RootsWeb in some respects, and RW has no interest in being a referee for private arrangements. That is true even when first contact was made via a RW mailing list.

Grovel politely if you are open to that approach, and if you think it will help, but at the end of the day make sure the "contributor" understands that problems that happen off the list, stay off the list -- in every respect.
