There are many websites where volunteer researchers offer private
lookups,
one of them at
the moment that I can think of off the top of my head is RAOK -- Random

or is it RAOGK -- Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness.

When I read the above comment I got to wondering exactly how RAOGK felt
about using subscription databases in doing research and lookups...so I went
directly to the horse's mouth (figuratively speaking of course <g>) and asked
Bridgett.

Her reply as to what is permissible at RAOGK fits with my impression as to
what would be allowable on a RootsWeb list as well and what would not be.
Bridgett stated:
" It isn't that I mind them doing lookups through their subscriptions, but I
do mind the 'advertising' of such."

That is precisely where I'd draw the line as well on the RootsWeb lists.
Helping someone who has asked for your help with all the resources at your
disposal is one thing--but setting yourself up as THE source of information and
data from a subscription service when you are an individual subscriber to that
service isn't generally a good idea and could draw the attention of the
company offering the service as possible abuse.
