Subject: Transcription errors in Salem VRs

I wrote Ray Brown on October 4th and October 6th regarding transcription
errors in the Salem birth VRs. In 5 pages I found 5 typographical errors,
one was a 20 year error in the date, and a missing name. In addition, there
is at least one surname, STANDLEY, entirely missing.

As Jane Devlin and Ray share there files, I wrote Jane as well. She
immediately removed the Salem VRs from her site. At this time, I have not
heard from Ray. I checked his site and those errors are still there.

If you use Ray's site, please be sure to request that someone check the CDs
or the books to be sure what you get is as accurate as the people got them
in the published books.

It is with regret that I post this because Ray and Jane are working hard to
put the VRs online. However, as Ray doesn't seem to be replying or doing
anything, I feel this warning is necessary. Also, I am removing all links to
Ray's site from the Essex County web site.

It has been said in the past, but please remember that the published VRs are
only secondary sources at best. It is always advisable to take these entries
with a dose of skepticism.
