Hi Joel,

Although I agree that "Saints and Strangers" is a good account of the
Pilgrims, a later book, "Plymouth Colony, Its History & People 1620-1691" by
Eugene Aubrey Stratton, published in 1986 is excellent, both in writing style
and content (all fully documented). Stratton's book is generally
acknowledged to be the best and most accurate on this topic to date.

I have an interest in William and Mary Brewster as I descend through their
daughter Patience, who married Thomas Prence.

Stratton deals with Mary Brewster (page 250), noting that the Wentworth
identity was put forth by John G. Hunt, "New Light on the Brewsters of
Scrooby and New England" published in The American Genealogist (TAG), 41:1.
However, Stratton also notes that Hunt himself abandoned the Wentworth claim
when he wrote in "Of Mary Brewster" (1984-5) that she was not Mary Wentworth
but Mary Wyrral. But- even that evidence is deemed inadequate so...bottom
line, her parentage is still thought to be inadequate.

If you have an opportunity to borrow a copy of Stratton's book- do so. The
book is divided into three parts- the first two, like "Saints and Strangers"
is written in such a way as to make the history of this group totally
absorbing. Part three containes biographical sketches.

And- to all....a Happy Thanksgiving!!
