Good Evening All:
In reading some old newspapers on line I came across this obituary on Lucy
Jane (Stoddard) Aldrich. I copied it out for anyone who might be interested
in reading it.
The Worcester Spy 28 Oct 1902
Former Upton Woman Dies in Brookline
Special to the Spy.
Upton, Oct 27. - Relatives in Upton have received word announcing the death
in Brookline, yesterday, of Mrs. Lucy J. Aldrich, who was formerly one of
the most widely known women in Upton. Her death came, yesterday, its
announcement being received here with feelings of surprise and sorrow. Mrs.
Aldrich was a daughter of Col. Elijah and Zilpha (Nelson) Stoddard, who were
prominent in the early history of Upton. She was a sister of Col. E. B.
Stoddard, ex-mayor of Worcester, and the mother of Hon. Samuel N. Aldrich,
president of the state bank in Boston, having many other relatives, who,
like, himself, became prominently connected with matters in general interest
to the communities where they have lived.
Mrs. Aldrich had made her home with her youngest son, Charles E. Aldrich, at
190 Babcock Street, in Brookline, for many years. She was born March 12,
1815, in Upton and was married April 24, 1836, to Sylvanus B. Aldrich of
Northbridge. She lived in Upton until after the death of her husband,
March 17, 1881, when she went to Brookline, to reside with her youngest son.
Mrs. Aldrich sustained all the relations of the family circle in a superior
way. She was of the old New England type of woman, who possessed that quiet
dignity and charm in her manner that comes only from a purely good and noble
character. She was a member of the First Congregational Church Society in
Upton for many years, and was always interested in its welfare.
The deceased is survived by four sons, Samuel N. Aldrich, president of the
State Bank of Boston; Henry A. Aldrich, a retired merchant; Edward J.
Aldrich, a member of the Boston school committee, and Charles E. Aldrich, a
boot and shoe manufacturer. Besides these, there is a brother in Worcester,
Col. E. B. Stoddard. There will be a burial service in Lakeview Cemetery on
Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Alexander Wiswall,
pastor of the Congregational church.
