The 1860 Census schedule has a column labeled "Color, White, black, or mulatto". Since the census taker didn't have a place to identify a mixed Indian/white person, I'd guess the mulatto column was the best option. There is a lot of interesting reading around the christian Indian settlements in Mendon and its not at all unlikely the family groups intermingled.
