Subject: [Barnstable Co MA] Consolidated Contents of The American Genealogist
Date: Thu, 17 Jun 2010 17:57:32 -0400

When The New England Historic Genealogical Society began posting
issues of The American Genealogist on its web site a few years ago I
began working on a file listing the contents of that esteemed
journal. For those of you not familiar with it, TAG is the foremost
independent (i.e., not associated with any society or organization)
scholarly genealogical journal in the country. It is so highly
respected that Henry B. Hoff, editor of The New England Historical
and Genealogical Register, has remarked that, when editing Register
articles, he makes certain that authors have cited all relevant TAG
articles. Many important articles concerning Barnstable County
families have been published in TAG.

TAG began in in 1922 as The New Haven Genealogical Magazine, and its
first eight volumes specialized in the families of that area. It was
not until 1932 that its title was changed to The American Genealogist
and its focus was enlarged. For that reason my Consolidated Contents
begin with Vol. IX (1932-33), and it currently covers through Vol.
XLIII (1967), thus including all volumes on the NEHGS site. I will
continue to revise and expand it, but progress will be somewhat
slower as I will have to go to the library to consult printed copies,
which is not as convenient as viewing them online.
