hi --

i had an ancestor, Captain John C. PARKER, who was the Chief of Police in New
Bedford during that time. i have a photo of him in his uniform from the
newspaper. one of my relatives still has his wooden stick. i recall in his
obituary that he used that stick when he had to. in one of the New Bedford books,
it mentions the riot and police using their sticks. you can see the photo (of
Capt. John C. PARKER; it is rather faded) on one of my home page:
