Charles - Chelsea was recorded separately from Boston proper, by it's
self for those years :)

Not sure if this will be any help to you or anyone else ... but over a
year ago I started to post a surname index of those found in the 1860
census of Chelsea and North Chelsea ... this is a surname index "only"
sorry that I haven't gotten back to it and finished it up, but as it
stands at the moment, I ended with page 87 of 335 pages :( if you will
post the names that you are searching for ... I am sure some kind soul
can do a look up for you :)

here is my incomplete works, if you want to take a peak at it ...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hedgpeth/ma_chelsea/1860_census_surname_index.htm

FYI: ancestry census images shows the following break downs ...

for 1870
Chelsea
East Boston
North Chelsea
Winthrop
along with 16 wards for Boston ...

for 1860
Chelsea
North Chelsea
Winthrop
along with 12 wards for Boston ...

for 1850
Chelsea
East Boston (Boston Ward 4)
North Chelsea
along with 12 wards for Boston ...

in 1880 Chelsea is listed as "other townships" :(

for 1840
Chelsea
Not Stated
along with 12 wards for Boston ...

more later on ...
