Message Board Post:
Murdo MacLean married Helen Alice Cooper on September 4, 1901 in Dunbarton, New Kilpatrick. Helen was my Great Grandmother's, Annie Cooper Savage, sister.
I am trying to get the correct info on Murdo.
Murdo and his brother Charles were born to a Catherine (Kate) MacLean in Strath, Skye. Both were listed as illegitimate, so no fathers name.
Murdo was born December 22, 1874
Charles same date but in 1879
On the 1881 census:
Dwelling: Strolamus
Census Place: Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Kate MC LEAN U 32 F Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Dressmaker
Murdo (probably short for Murdoch) GRANT 6 M Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Charles GRANT 1 M Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Son
Agnes MC LEAN 15 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Dom Servt
This says Kate was unmarried but why would Murdo and Charles have the last name of "Grant"? By the 1891 census the boys are now MacLean. On the 1901 census she is listed as "widow of Gas Labourer".
If anyone else needs MacLean info on this family:
Catherine's parents were Duncan and Mary McPherson MacLean.
Duncan born June 15, 1810 in Gleneig, Skye, Inverness. Only have his father's name as Angus.
They married January 29, 1839.
Children:
John...born Jan 7, 1840, Strath
Flora...born April 12, 1842, Strath
Margaret...born March 3, 1847
Twins?
Ann...born May 18, 1849, Strath (seems she died before 1851 census)
Ewen..born May 18, 1849, Strath
Catherine...born April 30, 1851
Neil...born about 1875
1851 Census:
Duncan and Mary were in Strath, he was a shepherd
address is Kilbride
1861 Census:
Family is in Greenock West, Renfrewshire, and he is a Balemakers Labourers.
Wilson Land Union Court for address?
1871 Census:
The family is in Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire
4 Watt Place
Duncan is a labourer
1881 Census:
Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire
he is a Labourer Sugar Porters Un E (?)
address is 20 Hamilton St
By 1881 Census, Catherine (Kate) is back on Skye with her two young sons, Murdo 6 and Charles 1 and an Agnes who must be some type of relative.
1891 Census:
Catherine and boys are now in Maryhill, Barony, Lanarkshire on 25 Argyle St
She is a Waskerwoman...think it should be washerwoman
1901 Census:
Catherine and boys are in same area but live at 32 Argyle St. Here she says she is a widow of a Gas Labourer?
