Thom is a Sept of the Scottish Clan MacThomas. A sept is a subdivision of a
clan. Clan MacThomas originated from one of the sons of a chief of Clan
MacKintosh, in the 1400's, I believe. The Mackintoshes were centered near
Loch Ness, in the north of Scotland, and the MacThomases moved slightly
to the south, most settling in Glen Shee (valley of the fairies). One of the early
great leaders of Clan MacThomas was Thomas Mor (mighty Tom), about whom
there are many wonderful stories. The Thom, Thomson and similar septs are
obviously derived from mac (son of) Thomas in some manner. The MacComb,
MacComey, and other septs derive from the fact that in Gaelic, Thomas is pronounced "Homas," with a gutteral sound to the "H". There is a brief clan
history on the internet - look up Clan MacThomas.

Good day Hamish,
I dont have much on Pye beyond I worked for Pye Telecom, Cambridge England in
the 80s. My mom and family are Thom's. I ve noticed that this extended
family includes Thompson, maybe Thomson, Thoms McIntosh, MacCombie, MacThomas etc.
One might think that Thom is a root name however it seems to be obscure. I
have noticed your emails and thought I would ask about the THOM connection to
this family tree.
Cheers,
Joe
