Albuquerque Journal - February 23, 2003

Lavinia Casias, a resident of Albuquerque since 1940, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Casias, and her brothers Ernest and Arthur Maes. Mrs. Casias is survived by a daughter, Ruth Merrill of Albuquerque, and a son, Robert Casias and wife Rita of Ojai, CA; five grandchildren; Kevin Qualle and wife Marguerite of Virginia Beach, VA; Carla Chalk and husband Greg, of Albuquerque, NM; Marc Casias and wife Adele, of La Mesa, CA; Steven Casias and wife, Lori of Wildomar, CA; Lisa Sugarman and husband, Jeff of Santa Rosa, CA; She also had seven great-grandchildren: Heather Smith, Joe Casias, Maricris Qualle, Paul Casias, Kimberlee Casias, Alexander Sugarman and Mila Sugarman; two nieces, Anne Maes, of San Diego, CA and Carla Hoertkorn of Ross, CA. Mrs. Casias graduated from Trinidad, Colo, High School, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa. Lavinia did her graduate work in Social W!
ork at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. Mrs. Casias was employed by Health and Social Services, first as a Caseworker, then as County Director in Valencia County and finally as a Supervisor in Albuquerque until her retirement. Mrs. Casias was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, and was active in church work until the final years of her life. A Memorial Service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, service time is pending. Any memorial gifts should be donated to the church in her name.
