There is a very thorough and excellent treatment of this family in NEHG Register 152, July 1998. It begins at page 286 and extends through about 4 volumes. On p 288 the author talks about John WALLIS possibly b in Cornwall, England abt 1627 or earlier & d in Gloucester, MA 13 Sep 1690. His wife was Mary PHIPPEN bap at Hingham, MA 5 Mar 1343/4 and died, prob. at Glocester, after 29 Apr 1691, dau of Joseph & Dorcas (Wood) Phippen.
In the biolgraphical sketch of John (1) the author refers to the incident on 20 June 1724 in which three grandsons and a grandson-in-law, all young men, were killed by Indians. A daughter, daughter-in-law, and five young grandchildren had previously been killed by Indians in 1702. John Lane, b. abt 1688 was the son of John LANE and Dorcas (Wallis) Lane. Thomas Finson, also killed by Indians 1724, was the husband of John Lane's sister,
Mary. Joseph Wallis b. 24 April 1704 killed 22 June 1724 was son of James and Martha (Standford) Wallis. James (the son of John 1) d between 17 May 1739 and 31 March 1744. He had a son, James (the 3rd grandson who was killed) bap. 1 Nov 1696, killed 1724 who had married Hannah Card and left 2 daughters one of whom m. a Denning or Dennen. Although the quote mentions 3 fishing vessels being taken; it mentions whose who were killed as
James Wallis, Thomas Finson, John Lane, Richard Tarr (not a member of the family) and Joseph Wallis. Perhaps either James Sr. escaped or the boat belonged to him but he was not with them on the fishing trip.
There is much, much more information about these individuals in the articles in the Register.

(I'm studying history as fast as I can!) It seems that most of the Maine settlers were driven out by Indian raids during that period and I imagine many came to Essex. Co. Does anyone have any recommended reading or references that I might check?
